Planning to take a vehicle on the ferry? Save A Spot vehicle reservations can help make your next ferry trip a smooth sailing. It's easy to get started. Simply click the "Make a Reservation" button on the right.

Routes Accepting Reservations include:
  • Port Townsend/Coupeville
  • Anacortes/San Juan Islands(Lopez, Shaw, Orcas, Friday Harbor)
  • The International route between to and from Sidney B.C. is out of service until further notice due to COVID-19 impacts.

Vehicle reservations are now available through September 26.

Reservations are for vehicles only (walk-on passengers and bicyclists board without reservations)

No reservation? In addition to the 10% of stand-by space on each sailing, more standby space is always available on sailings when drivers don't use their reservations or if they travel at a different time. While you may not always get on the sailing of your choice, traveling standby is an option when you need to travel at the last minute or can't make a reservation.

On the Anacortes/San Juan Islands routes, reservation space is released according to the following schedule:

Initial Release - 30% of standard vehicle reservation space for all sailings on the entire schedule is normally released at 7:00 a.m. PT, 2-months prior to the season start date. Due to COVID-19 impacts, sailing schedules and reservation releases may be delayed and may not be available 2-months prior to the schedule start dates. See below for updated release dates. Note: Tall reservation space for large, non-standard vehicles is available all at once in the initial release.

Current/Upcoming Schedules:

- June 21, 2020 through September 26, 2020: Available now

September 27, 2020 - January 2, 2021: Reservations will be released on Thursday, September 10 at 7:00 a.m. PT

2nd Release - An additional 30% of vessel space for standard vehicles is released at 7:00 a.m. PT, 2 weeks before each specific sailing date.

3rd Release - The final 30% of space for standard vehicles is released at 7:00 a.m. PT, 2 days before each specific sailing date.

  • 10% of vessel space is always held open for emergency and stand-by vehicles.

On the Port Townsend/Coupeville route, all reservation space (80% of the vessel) is available on the initial release date. 20% of vessel space is always held open for emergency and stand-by vehicles.

Traveling with a Reservation


  • Each route has a specific time that reservation holders should arrive at their departure terminal to ensure they are loaded on their reserved sailing.  See recommended arrival times for each route below.
  • You may arrive for an earlier or later sailing, but you will travel standby as space is available.
  • If you do not show up for travel for any sailing (reserved or standby) on the same day of your reservation, you will be charged a No-Show fee.  If you are travelling standby on a different sailing than reserved, please let the ticket seller know so you are not charged the no-show fee.

Departures from Port Townsend/Coupeville: Arrive at the end of the line 30-45 minutes in advance of reserved sailing.

Departures from Anacortes/San Juan Islands (domestic): Drivers are encouraged to arrive at the end of the line at least 45-60 minutes prior to their reserved sailing time.  Vehicles must be ticketed and through the toll booth at least 30 minutes prior to reserved sailing for all westbound and eastbound departures. Vehicles that do not check in at the toll booth at least 30 minutes ahead of the reserved sailing time will lose their reserved space and must travel standby. Please note that on busier sailings, vehicles may be required to queue up before reaching the toll booth. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that they are checked in more than 30 minutes prior to their reservation.

Departures from Anacortes and Friday Harbor (international): Arrive at the toll booth at least 60 minutes in advance of reserved sailing. Please arrive with your travel documents ready and in hand.

Departures from Sidney, B.C.: Arrive 90 minutes in advance to ensure process by immigration. Please
arrive with
your travel documents ready and in hand.


What to bring

  • Print barcode from confirmation email if possible. If not, bring reservation confirmation number.

  • If travelling to or from Sidney B.C., please review the international travel information to ensure you have the correct documentation to enter Canada or the U.S. 

Changing or Cancelling a Reservation

  • Reservations must be canceled before 5:00 p.m. the day prior to travel in order to avoid a no-show fee.

  • Unlimited changes are permitted up to 5:00 p.m. the day prior to the reserved sailing. One change is allowed after 5:00 p.m. but must be made more than two hours in advance of the reserved sailing for Coupeville/Port Townsend and Anacortes/San Juan Island/Sidney B.C. reservations.  Any reservations cancelled after making the one allowable change after 5:00 p.m. the day before will be charged a no-show fee.

  • Reservations for San Juan Island travel are reserved as separate legs. Please be reminded if you change or cancel an outbound trip, you may also need to change or cancel the return trip to avoid a no-show fee.
